Expecting a baby can be a thrilling and emotional time. But along with the joy and excitement, you might also be feeling a little anxiety.

One of the best ways to get rid of some of that worry is to take part in a good birthing class. Here you can learn about your options.

And breathe ...

Classes offer a host of benefits. For one thing, you may find comfort in knowing you're not alone. Many women will have the same questions and concerns that you have. Meeting in a group lets you discuss any anxieties you may have and to learn what to expect during labor and delivery.

Also, many women choose to attend birthing classes with the partner who will be in the delivery room with them. Not only can your partner learn valuable delivery-room support techniques, but you may find that the classes strengthen your bond.

Classes may teach relaxation methods, ways to ease labor pain and some options for medical pain relief. You may also hear about birthing options, learn some useful coping skills and tour a birthing center.

Types of classes

Two of the most popular childbirth classes are Lamaze and the Bradley Method. Both were named after the people who developed them.

  • Lamaze. Lamaze classes teach relaxation and massage techniques to ease pain, moving and positioning for labor and birth, and ways for the birth partner to give support during the delivery.
  • Bradley. The Bradley Method helps women get ready for natural labor and birth without medication. The program includes information about nutrition and exercise, labor rehearsals and pain management through relaxation, as well as tips for the partner on the best way to support the mother.

There are a number of other childbirth-class options, including the Alexander technique, HypnoBirthing, Birthing from Within and Birth Works. Your doctor can help you choose the one that is right for you.

Before you decide on a program, ask the following questions:

  • Is the instructor certified?
  • Are you comfortable with the instructor's philosophy about labor and birth?
  • How many couples will be in the class?
  • Will the scheduled time, length and location be convenient?
  • What is the cost?

Finding the class that's right for you may take a little research. Your doctor can help guide you in your selection.

No matter which class you choose, try to sign up early. Ideally, you should enroll several months before your due date. Classes may fill up quickly.

Learning all you can about labor and delivery is a great way to ease your mind and approach your child's birth with confidence.
