Did Everton Make the Right Choices in January?

January has come and gone as quickly as Everton letting in a set-piece goal. There were no new signing for the Toffees in January after being linked with so many. So how did Everton really fair in the January transfer window?

Loans and Experience

There were a few youngsters that left Everton in January and rightly so. They needed experience and more importantly the minutes. Mason Holgate, Kieran Dowell, Antony Evans, and Beni Baningime were all loaned out in January.

This is a good move for the youngsters and Everton as well. It could be argued that they deserved minutes in the first team. We tend to agree, however that’s not the case. Marcel Brands and Marco Silva will hope they return to the squad in the summer and push for starting spots.

Holding Firm on Gana Gueye

The main story towards the end of January was Idrissa Gana Gueye and Paris Saint-Germain. Everton stood firm and rejected bids for their star midfielder. Reportedly turning down 21.6 million in the process.

Gana handed in a transfer request as his head was turned by the French giants. Everton were not bullied though. But, should they have cashed in on their star player?

We will find out once the summer rolls around if Everton made the right decision on Gana. Will Everton receive a bid of 20 million for the 30-year-old? It’s hard to see that happening. Everton should have sold Gana, started Beni, Davies or McCarthy in the short-term and reinvested that money in the summer.

No New Signings?

We were told from the beginning to not expect any new signing. Farhad Moshiri has dumped a lot of money into this squad and results have been poor. Brands was brought in the summer to fix this mess and he is going to need way more time.

Balancing the massive wage bill is a difficult task after seeing the wages some players are on. That alone should have reminded Evertonians to not expect much.

While Everton were linked with a handful of players, they made the right choice to stand pat, continue to scout and hopefully attack the market early in the summer.

Final Thoughts

Striker, Rightwing, Central Mid and Rightback should be the top priorities for Everton when summer rolls around. We can even say Centerback. There is a lot to improve still.

Everton need time. Koeman and Steve Walsh have set to club back aways. Not making signings for the sake of it is a start in the right direction.
