Never Do in a Public Restroom

Having a bathroom every place we go is a convenience many of us take for granted. In other countries, the quantity of public restrooms isn’t nearly the number we have in the United States. Some even charge you to use them.

Yet the convenience may not be worth the risk. Public restrooms are full of more germs than we realize.

Here are five key things you should never do in a public restroom.

1. Go Barefoot

There aren’t a lot of places you’ll have the chance to go barefoot in a public restroom, as most stores require shoes to shop there. But places like the beach or public bathrooms while you’re camping are definitely locales where you’ll want to wear shoes.

Feet are already more likely to encounter dirt, and even hard soles absorb germs. Slip on a pair of flip flops before you head to an outdoor public bathroom. Check out this article to help you avoid germs in public bathrooms.

2. Bypass the Sinks

Make sure you wash your hands in a public restroom! It seems like a no-brainer, but lots of people skip this step.

Given the number of germs and the unknown number of people who’ve trouped through there since the last cleaning, you definitely need to make this a priority. The CDC has five steps to follow if you need a refresher on best handwashing practices.

3. Eat

In general, it’s a good practice to leave food outside the bathroom. Yet if you’re at the beach or another place with a public restroom near a snack stand, it’s understandable that you might bring a snack into the bathroom. Still, you can avoid this by planning ahead.

Use the bathroom first, and then get in line for the food (after thoroughly washing your hands!). The reverse just isn’t sanitary, and if you’re getting food for someone else besides yourself, they’ll appreciate it, too.

4. Have Sex

You never know where the mood will strike you. If you’re feeling amorous and don’t want to take time to go home, don’t use a public restroom. While it’s private, it’s also pretty dirty.

Find another spot to express your feelings for your partner to help you stay as fresh and hygienic as possible.

5. Text in a Public Restroom

While you might be tempted to pull out your phone while you’re taking care of business, you should refrain. Instead, wait until you’re done and you’ve washed your hands to pull it out. Most cell phones are actually dirtier than toilet seats, and keeping them put away in the bathroom can help.

Staying Clean

It’s inevitable that nature calls when you’re out in public, so you’ll have to use a public restroom eventually. When you do, make sure to avoid these five key things to stay as clean as possible.

You’ll also avoid spreading germs to others, or worse, taking them home, if you maintain good habits like these.
