All the creative world is talking about the NEW Adobe Photoshop 2020 Release. Adobe Co. honored the annual Adobe Max conference by updating almost its entire product line: Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Character Animator, Audition, Substance Alchemist, Dimension, and its mobile apps.

However, as a retoucher, I’m most interested in Adobe Photoshop 2020, which received a large number of convenient functions that will make my image editing life easier.

1. “Object Selection” and “Background Removal”

After the Photoshop CC update, the Properties window has two small, but very useful functions that are powered by the Adobe Sensei AI. You can use the “Rectangle area” or “Lasso” tool to make the selection: Photoshop will detect what objects are located within the area, highlight them, and exclude them from the selection. The “Object selection” can also be used as a quick mask. For background removal, you simply click on “Delete background” and it will be automatically removed from the photograph.

2. Quick Smart-Object Transformation

Previously, if you had to return layers from a smart-object to the workspace, you had to copy them back. Now, the drop-down menu has the option that allows transforming smart objects back into a group of layers and vice versa.

3. Smart “Content-Aware Fill”

The “Content-Aware Fill” is another function that incorporates AI capabilities. The Sampling Area Options allow you to choose which image area Photoshop 2020 will use as a sample when deleting unwanted content.

Other than the standard rectangle selection, you now also have access to the following options:

  • “Automatic” — Photoshop determines the areas that will be filled by itself based on the colors and texture.
  • Custom” — the user chooses the area with the Brush tool.

4. Zoom In on the Selected Layer

This is one of the most useful new Photoshop features for people, who work with a large number of small details on a single canvas. If you click the layer while pressing down the “Alt” key, you’ll immediately zoom in on it and it will fill your entire window, making Ps even more attractive when it comes to the Lightroom vs Photoshop comparison.

5. Expanded “Properties” Panel

Other than the operations described in the first 2 paragraphs, Photoshop new features include the “Align and distribute” set of functions. When you have a selected object, you can instantly align it across the canvas without any selections or choose several objects.

The Text layers Properties have also been expanded, and the “Convert to Shape” and “Transform to Frame” quick functions were added.

6. Updated “Presets” Panel

In the Adobe Photoshop new version, Presets received a separate panel. To apply a preset, you merely have to drag it from the panel onto the image the preview screen will allow you to evaluate the result quickly. You can also group and organize the presets by dragging them around.

7. The “~” Key as an Eraser

In the past, you could delete something only with the Eraser tool by pressing or clicking “E”. Now, when drawing with a brush, you can press down “~” and start erasing, however, unlike with the Eraser, you’ll be removing things while using the brush settings. 8. Close Other Tabs

When you have a lot of documents opened and need to close each one manually, it takes some time and can be quite irritating. Now you can simply right-click your main document and press “Close others.”

9. Updated “Warp” and “Transformation” Tools

Previously the image was broken down into 9 large areas when warping, which made any manipulations needlessly irritating. Now you can create crossing, vertical, and horizontal lines by pressing “Alt”, which makes warping more convenient and superior to anything you can find in free Adobe Photoshop alternatives.

When using free transform or, for instance, dragging the selection corner, the “constrain aspect ratio” is now enabled by default. You don’t need to keep pressing Shift since it only enables and disables that option now.

10. Cloud Documents

Adobe Photoshop 2020 includes a new cloud document system that represents the next generation of the Creative Cloud files. Developers stated that such documents are optimized to work with desktop and mobile apps: Photoshop, XD, Fresco, and Aero.

Cloud documents are stored separately from the Creative Cloud files, but they still take up storage space. You can save files locally Adobe Photoshop 2020 remembers how the last document was saved and uses the same option when saving or opening the next one by default.

Other Changes

  • 32-bit HDR-images can now be edited in the “Curves” and “Brightness/Contrast” The “smart-filter” and “correction layer” settings also became available.
  • Images can be quickly saved in GIF: File > Save as.
  • The Crop function became more visually pleasing and it now has better visible white corners.
  • The “Lens blur” filter is now more efficient at using data about the depth of an image taken with a camera. You can now establish a focal point to select which parts of the image will be blurred and which will stay in focus.
